Story / Description:

This original handmade painting marks the first piece in my series Memorias de Niñez / Childhood Memories, created for my upcoming exhibition Tres Generaciones in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The series is both a celebration and a tribute to my grandfather and my mother—my earliest sources of inspiration and creativity.

The still-life composition unites three childhood games, each symbolizing one generation. My grandfather is represented by the homemade kite he once taught me to build, adorned with his iconic abstract bird and a tail of ribbons in the Puerto Rican flag’s colors—an ode to the island he so deeply loved and defended. At the center, a tray holds my mother’s treasured set of jacks, complete with her favorite purple pouch—an homage to her playful spirit and the countless afternoons she shared her games with me. Finally, my own presence appears through a set of colorful Dungeons & Dragons dice and their gray pouch, echoing my imagination, storytelling, and creative adventures.

Bringing the generations together is a glass jar filled with brushes, compasses, and rulers, their shadows touching each object—symbols of the common thread of creativity binding us all. Behind it, the open sky suggests both flight and continuity, reminding us that memory, play, and imagination are timeless legacies passed from one generation to the next.
